Abstract

At present, post-mortem neuropathology and detection of PrPsc are the only methods available to confirm clinical diagnosis of TSE. We intend to use magnetic resonance spectroscopy to determine the anatomical and biochemical changes in the brain associated with TSE. Studies in two different murine models of scrapie, using a combination of in vitro MRS and biochemical techniques will determine whether neuronal loss is a fundamental lesion in the TSEs which gives rise to clinical disease. Neuronal cell death will be correlated with other indices including infectivity and the presence of PrPsc. This study is part of a larger collaboration including MR imaging using the same scrapie models.
