Abstract
The aim of this project is to apply strain-typing methods, previously used to characterise scrapie and BSE strains, to the agents causing Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD). Previous studies have shown that the BSE agent produces remarkably consistent and characteristic patterns of disease when transmitted from cattle to mice and that these transmission characteristics have been maintained after passage through several other species, for example domestic cats. This project includes a series of transmissions to mice from sporadic CJD cases, including two from dairy farmers potentially exposed to BSE, and from three new variant" CJD cases.
