Abstract

The IAH Pirbright Laboratory acts as the Community Reference Laboratory for Swine Vesicular Disease (CRL for SVD). In this capacity the laboratory provides a diagnostic service for those EU states that do not have their own facilities and a confirmatory service for those that do. The laboratory performs molecular epidemiological studies to trace the origins of outbreaks and carries out phylogenetic analyses to understand better the nature and history of SVD virus. Research is performed to improve current diagnostic tests and to develop new approaches. Expert advice is provided to the European Commission and to Member States relating to epidemiology, control and diagnosis of SVD.
