Abstract

This project seeks to investigate the replication of pathogenic and vaccine strains of Mareks disease virus (MDV) in birds of different genotypes, using a quantitative PCR approach. A modified assay using a Taqman probes has been developed to facilitate these comparisons. The time course of viral infection has been established for a range of vaccine and pathogenic strains. In each case large differences in replication have been observed in birds of different genotypes. There the extent of replication of pathogenic and attenuated strains of MDV correlates strongly across genotypes, indicating that measurement of the replication of vaccine virus can identify genetically resistant birds.
