Abstract

The central role of cytokines in the regulation and control of the immune response makes them a prime target for exploitation in strategies aimed at inducing effective immunity to microbial pathogens. An initial stage of investigations of immunity requires an ability to analyse cytokines in vaccinated or infected animals and assays for cattle cytokine mRNA and proteins have been established. The use of immunoregulatory cytokines in vaccination strategies is now being developed. Initial studies have focussed on IL-12, produced by antigen presenting cells and a key cytokine in the regulation of the type 1 several type 2 helper T cell responses. Its role on the bias of the T cell response of cattle is being defined and its possible use as an immunomodulatory adjuvant explored.
