Abstract

Dendritic cells are pivotal in the induction of immune responses and are the only antigen presenting cell capable of initiating an immune response in a na¿ve animal. An understanding of their function is necessary for the development of strategies aimed at modulating the immune response and protecting animals from disease. A number of distinguishable sup-populations of dendritic cells have been identified in the afferent lymph and body tissues of cattle. The way in which these cells vary in ability to stimulate T cells and affect the type of T cell response is being analysed.
