Abstract
The production of IL-6 during Eimeria infection in both birds and mice was investigated. Two bioassays were used to detect chicken IL-6-like factors in supernatants (s/n) from chicken fibroblasts, macrophages and splenocytes. In addition, the presence of IL-6-like factors was detected in serum taken from chickens infected with the highly pathogenic/moderately immunogenic E. tenella, but not sera from those infected with the moderately pathogenic/highly immunogenic E. maxima. Systemic and local IL-6 production during E. vermiformis infection was also investigated, in resistant BALB/c, and susceptible C57BL/6, mice, using a murine IL-6 ELISA and bioassay. Enhanced/earlier systemic production of IL-6 in serum was seen in infected BALB/c mice compared to C57BL/6 mice. This difference was also reflected at the local level, in s/n from stimulated mesenteric lymph nodes.
