Abstract

Initial studies have shown that inbred lines of chicken which show resistance or susceptibility to systemic salmonellosis also show a degree of resistance/susceptibility to localisation in the reproductive tract in hens of laying age infected with S. enteritidis and S. pullorum. In addition, a consistent difference was seen in the extent to which S. typhimurium and S. enteritidis were excreted in the faeces of orally infected chickens. This effect occurred soon after infection and this seemed unlikely to be associated with the onset of an immune response. We have previously identified inbred lines of chickens which are highly resistant or highly susceptible to visceral infection by Salmonella spp. This project aims to map the genes responsible for this resistance in crosses between resistant line 61 birds and susceptible line 15I birds. If successful this work will lead toward the isolation and identification of the resistance genes, and also toward the development of marker assisted selection in commercial poultry.
