Abstract

The development of comprehensive genetic maps for the chicken has opened up the possibility of identifying genes which affect susceptibility to disease by genomic mapping approaches. In previous work we have identified inbred lines of chickens which are susceptible or resistant to each of the major diseases of poultry. We have now established this methodology and mapped genes which influence resistance to salmonellosis and to Marek's disease. Work will concentrate on mapping further resistance genes affecting other diseases and in improving tools and methodologies involved in this process.
