Abstract
Tomato is a very valuable crop worldwide, as well as being the model in the Solanaceae. This family contains some of the worlds most important vegetable crops including potato and pepper. Gene order in the Solanaceae is highly conserved and is virtually syntenic and colinear between these species. An international Tomato Genome Sequencing Project is underway and the UK will contribute the sequence for chromosome 4. This genomic data, combined with decades of tomato genetics and breeding provide an excellent foundation for a step change in linking genes with phenotypes. In preliminary experiments we have silenced the CNR gene in wild type tomato fruit using virus induced gene silencing (VIGS) and observed non-ripening pericarp sectors. We propose to use VIGS to further investigate gene functions associated with control of fruit quality and to develop a virus technology for over-expression of genes in tomato fruits. This project will provide a platform for functional analysis of genes affecting quality attributes in tomato and to exploit the emerging tomato genome sequence rapidly and efficiently. The proposed works are highly relevant of BBSRC¿s priority areas Epigenetics, Crop Science, Gene Function Analysis in Development Biology and Tools and Technologies. They fit with the Warwick HRIs Science Mission to provide academic excellence in plant and microbial sciences and its application to horticulture, crops and the environment. This project is both complementary to and synergistic with Warwick HRI other research activities related to crop sciences and plant-pathogen interactions.
