Abstract

The objective is to identify and assess grassland management systems in both environmental and production terms. Grassland systems with different nitrogen fertilizer and slurry management are represented by 1 ha farmlets which are cut for silage and grazed by beef cattle. Managements include the use of current fertilizer recommendations and surface applied slurry, tactical nitrogen fertilizer usage, grass/white clover swards, and shallow injection of slurry and incorporation of a nitrification inhibitor. Measurements are made of herbage and animal production, nitrogen transfers and removal so that surpluses per unit area and per unit of animal production can be calculated.
