Abstract

The F1 hybrid T. repens x T. ambiguum and backcross hybrids to T. repens have been produced and provide suitable material for a model system to evaluate the potential of interspecific hybridization in clover improvement. T. ambiguum has a number of desirable characters, notably a rhizomatous habit, to introduce into white clover germplasm. The expression of the rhizomatous habit in hybrid derivatives will be assessed and the possibilities of stabilising genotypes including alien variation as enhanced white clover germplasm will be explored.
