Abstract
The efficient and rapid exploitation of the extensive genetic variation found in forages grasses is dependent on knowledge of the underlying gene action and the interrelationship of complex quantitative characters. With the emergence of work on genetic mapping in forage grasses, the identification of linkage relationships between quantitative traits and genetic markers has become feasible. The location of Quantitative Trait Loci (QTLs) and knowledge of their expression in different conditions will assist in the genetic/physiological/biochemical analysis of complex traits. Inclusion of genetic markers in selection indices will indicate the potential of marker assisted selection to optimise selection response and enhance the efficiency and precision of forage breeding programmes.
