Abstract

Analysis of the distribution of genetic diversity in relation to environment is essential for the efficient conservation of genetic resources, for planning further collections to maximise the additional diversity conserved, to understand the ecological significance of genetic variation, and to assess the potential future value of genes in future climates and farming systems. Further database development and statistical analysis is in progress towards this end. Major developments include the incorporation of molecular genetics data and the acquisition and integration of a computerised geographical information system. Gene bank management software has been developed in association with the database to improve the efficiency of daily management of the gene bank. Under the auspices of the ECP/GR a data base has been assembled covering Lolium perenne and Trifolium repens held in all major European gene banks. In 1995, IGER's database responsibility was extended to cover all Lolium species. The database is being used to improve the efficiency of European international collaboration on forage genetic resources.
