Abstract

If conserved germplasm is to be fully exploited by present and future breeders and research workers, preliminary characterisation of general application is necessary. Populations within a species, chosen to represent defined eco- geographical regions are examined in the field, glasshouse and controlled environment conditions for seed dormancy, dynamics, seasonal distribution of yield and sensitivity to cold, drought and disease. Under the auspices of the ECP/GR (European Cooperative Programme for Crop Genetic Resource Networks), a pan- European core collection has been created to improve the cost-efficiency of characterisation, and is being characterised in a multi-site collaborative trial across Europe.
