Abstract

The ryegrass, fescue complex and white clover encompass a variety of forms adapted to a wide range of climatic, biotic and edaphic conditions. These genetic resources are being accumulated by systematic plant collection from a range of diverse habitats both in the UK and overseas. Recent emphasis has been on collecting in eastern Europe because of the genetic erosion consequent on political changes there. Following the Rio de Janeiro convention on Biodiversity and the global agreement that each country has primary responsibility for its own biodiversity, increasing emphasis is being attached to collecting in the UK. Collection and seed conservation of populations from habitats in danger of genetic erosion ensure that a wide range of genetic resources are available for breeding requirements in the future. Research is being conducted, to optimise seed multiplication protocols and to maximise seed yield whilst maintaining genetic integrity. Another approach is to identify a limited number of ecotypes, which cover the known genetic range of a species and concentrate on the regeneration of these so called 'core' populations.
