Abstract

Environmental perturbations alter the proportion of current photosynthate stored as reserve carbohydrates. The regulation of these processes if investigated by studying: 1. the integration of vacuolar carbohydrate metabolism with the synthesis and export of sucrose from the cytoplasm; 2. the biological significance of the range of distinct oligo- and poly-saccharides which accumulate in the mesophyll vacuoles of grass leaves; 3. the pivotal role of sucrose in modulating both product and spatial partitioning; 4. the tissue level compartmentation of carbon metabolism in leaves.
