Abstract
The discovery that oxygen supply within legume nodules is controlled by a variable diffusion barrier has added to the mechanistic understanding of nodule functioning. Stressed and unstressed nodules of genetically diverse symbioses will be used to elucidate the location and mode of operation of the variable oxygen diffusion barrier. The relevance to whole plant performance of differences in oxygen supply and use within nodules will be evaluated.
