Abstract
The identification and mapping of QTL enables genetic dissection of complex quantitative traits and provides targets for marker-assisted selection and breeding. This project concentrates on QTL associated with valuable agronomic traits in the Lolium-Festuca grass complex and will evaluate marker-assisted selection response, QTL x environment interactions, and the role of QTL complementation in heterosis. The main objectives are 1. Using specifically-designed mapping families, map QTL for valuable traits including assimilation, accumulation and partitioning of WSC; heading date; leafiness and nitrogen use efficiency; abiotic and biotic stress tolerance. QTL relationships with specific functional genes will be established using information and probes developed from other work on the molecular genetics of forage grasses and information on synteny with other species such as barley and rice. 2. To develop marker-assisted breeding in grasses and establish proof of principle in relation to strategies for marker-assisted breeding (including marker-assisted selection, hybridisation and introgression). Marker selections will be used directly in breeding programmes and also for further mechanistic biochemical and physiological analysis.
