Abstract

This project will carry out genomics-based trait analysis in the target monocot species Lolium, Festuca and Avena incorporating information on synergy and synteny among them and also from relevant model species such as rice and barley. The project pivots on strong links between genetics and physiology and builds on previous achievements of work on carbohydrates and abiotic stress. Detailed genetic and biochemical analysis will be concentrated on traits related to carbohydrates in the grasses, and lipids in oats. The project has a core element of QTL mapping and identification of associated functional genes using syntenic and expression-based studies (e.g. cDNA, AFLP). This will be done within specific mapping families but also using information from more generalised linkage disequilibrium work across a wide range of `natural¿ populations from our genetic resources collections. Outputs will include a better understanding of genetic interactions between acquisition and utilisation of carbon in the monocot target species and the identification of functional genes providing targets for allele identification and marker-assisted selection. It will also underpin and link with strategic research on nitrogen-, phosphate- and water-use efficiency.
