Abstract

Phospholipid hydroperoxide glutathione peroxidase (PHGPx) is an important endogenous antioxidant, which is regulated by dietary selenium and plays a vital role in protection of membranes from oxidative stress. The biochemical mechanism and relevance of the human enzyme will be examined. Other proteins will also be tested for PHGPx activity. The enzymic activity may play a role in maintenance of body oxidative status and in protection against chronic disease.
