Abstract

There is great emphasis in recent government publications regarding public understanding of food science. At present, there is no scientific and empirical information relating to public understanding of food science, and its impact on consumer acceptance. The following research aims to systematically identify the barriers to effective public understanding of food science and its relationship to public acceptance of food-related technologies and their products, taking full account of the wider social context in which information is received by the public. It is proposed to address key scientific issues, drawing on theoretical insights from the psychological literature, in the systematic development of effective intervention studies and methodologies to be applied to the effective public understanding of new technologies (in particular, genetic engineering) used in food production. This project will increase public understanding of genetic engineering in food production in line with recommendations of the recent government white paper, and the technology foresight exercise. Interactions with IFR and BBSRC genetic scientists will ensure its relevance to the work of the research council, and will provide them with a strategy for effectively communicating science to the public. The research will be directly informed by our extensive contacts within the UK and Europe.
