Abstract
The three year research project is funded by the EC nuclear Fission programme. The aims of the project are to further understand the nature of risk perception, with emphasis on risk amplification and attenuation. The context of the research is radiation risk, where the aim is to identify key factors in risk communication effectiveness, and to formulate improved risk communication strategies. The project involves international cooperation between Sweden, Spain, Norway, France and the UK. In particular, IFR will be responsible for the research focusing on environmental impacts on the food chain, and empirically examining the amplification of related public risk perceptions targeted at food and agriculture. Assessments relative to other salient potential radiation risks will be made. In addition, full analysis of media reports of radiation related risk (including reported impact on the food chain) will be made, and empirical examination will determine impact of media risk information on public risk perceptions. Nationally representative surveys will monitor levels of perceived risk at a public level. The results will be used to inform the development of effective communication strategies later in the project. Particular emphasis on intercultural comparisons in risk perception and the development of effective communication strategy will be made.
