Abstract
There is currently much interest in the role of dietary phytoestrogens in human health. Whilst there is much epidemiological evidence that such compounds are beneficial in protection against certain cancers (and mechanistic hypotheses can be derived to account for this role) there is - at the same time - concern because of the possible deleterious effects of dietary phytoestrogens on reproductive function. We intend to explore (i) the relative roles of the glycosides as found in the plant with that of the aglycones formed during processing, (ii) the site(s) and mechanism(s) of absorption with particular emphasis on the small intestine, (iii) the role, if any, of dietary agents known to affect membrane permeability and glucose transport on isoflavone absorption, and (iv) the pharmacokinetics of absorption in a human study. The project will further understanding of the bioactivity of the phytoestrogens
