Abstract
The release of glucagon by the human pancrease is coupled to the release of insulin. Defective coupling between these hormones exists in disease states. Except for the protein- carbohydrate ratio, just how foods and gastrointestinal hormones affect coupling is essentially uninvestigated. This project examines whether endogenous glucagon-like insulinotropic peptide-1 production in response to various foods modifies the relative production of insulin and glucagon and whether there are any implications for the defective regulation of glucose metabolism in clinical states.
