Abstract

Iron deficiency is very common in women of child-bearing age and might have a detrimental effect both on the woman and any children she might have. Body iron levels cannot be predicted from total iron intake, but menstrual blood loss may be an important determinant of iron in the body. The aim of this project is to examine the effect of menstrual losses of blood on iron metabolism. The effect of high and low menstrual losses on body iron levels, the efficiency of iron absorption, and the rate of erythropoiesis will be examined using stable isotopes of iron and quantitative reticulocyte counting, in collaboration with the University of Wales College of Medicine. The results will determine the extent to which women are able to maintain iron balance by increasing the efficiency of absorption when menstrual losses of iron are high, and will clarify the extent to which the rate of erythropoiesis is a determinant of iron homeostasis.
