Abstract

The aim of this EUROFAN project is to investigate the possible existence of gene products in Saccharomyces cerevisiae which are involved in the synthesis of polyketides. Polyketides which are generally secondary metabolites have important pharmaceutical applications. We intend to identify polyketide genes by analyzing the metabolites of yeast subjected to different growth media. We will also use in silico analysis to search the unknown open reading frames (ORFs) uncovered by the Yeast Genome Sequencing project to identify similarities with existing polyketide synthase (PKS) genes from various species. Disruptants of putative PKS will more than likely be generated as a result of the EUROFAN six pack analysis.
