Abstract

It is intended to reprogramme the lipid biosynthetic machinery of Saccharomyces cerevisiae to produce short chain fatty acids. The approach taken will be to render the intrinsic fatty acid synthase (FAS) and elongase systems inactive by dint of producing stable mutations in their relevant genes and this yeast strain will be used for the heterologous expression of a system synthesizing short chain fatty acids.
