Abstract

This collaborative project brings together clinicians, immunologists and biochemists from 15 centres, including 4 industrial partners, to develop specific immunotherapy for food allergy. This approach currently offers the only opportunity to provide food allergic individuals with a cure. The study is focussed on two foods, fish and peach and will develop hypoallergenic mutants of the major allergens in these foods, namely fish parvalbumin and peach lipid transfer protein (LTP). The mutants will be produced either by heterologous expression and initially their efficacy for immunotherapy will be assessed using animal models. Mutants that pass this initial phase will then enter into clinical studies to evaluate their efficacy in man. IFR is involved in the initial stages with Dr Clare Mills evaluating the hypoallergenic variants from a structural view point whilst Professor Claudio Nicoletti is undertaking animal model studies to assess the efficacy of the peach LTP mutants.
