Abstract
The project will reduce waste in the food-chain, thereby contributing to sustainability, via improvements in recovery, recycling and recovery. We will initiate and exploit IFR and related research relevant to sustainability of the food chain with special reference to the exploitation of food-chain residues and co-products. This will be achieved by developing greater understanding of how to disassemble plant structures. We will develop combination approaches (using biochemical, chemical and physical processes) for selectively extracting and modifying cell-wall and intracellular components for exploitation as functional ingredients. These will include nutritionally and pharmacologically-functional biopolymers and oligomers, high-value rheologically-active polymers, and structuring agents.
