Abstract
The project will generate significant business opportunities and future revenue by aggressively identifying licensing opportunities for the technology, and in parallel, by providing a cost-effective service to customers who have a need for in-depth information on the rate, site and extent of digestion of their food or pharmaceutical product. The Model will provide an accurate and meaningful method for predicting the fate of compounds, nutrients and formulae prior to absorption. It is the first model developed to combine new and emerging scientific knowledge of the physical, mechanical, and biochemical environments experienced by the luminal contents, and therefore provides the first true simulation of the human gut. It is also the first model available that can handle real foods and pharmaceutical preparations and is also the only model that allows access at any stage of digestion, permitting sample collection and analysis at any time point. These unique design aspects fulfil a long required market need for a simulation that can be used to provide in-depth understanding of how physical, chemical and biochemical mechanisms interact during digestion, release and absorption of compounds from chemically and structurally complex food or drug preparations.
