Abstract

This project builds on established expertise in the molecular genetics of lactic acid bacteria. With a recently completed whole genome sequence Lactococcus lactis MG1363, a DNA microarray will be constructed and used in functional genomics analysis of genome structure, gene transfer systems and metabolism. The metabolic simplicity and availability of an advanced genetic toolbox make this lactococcal system advantageous as a generic model for investigation of genomic plasticity and consequences of metabolic perturbation. Fundamental molecular microbiology will be extended to Lactobacillus strains with demonstrated ability to compete with pathogens, and Bifidobacterium species associated with positive health status in the gastrointestinal tract.
