Abstract
This project aims to establish a cross-disciplinary network enabling life sciences, food and public health sectors in the Eastern region to take advantage of the advances in nutritional genomics. Studies of diet-gene interactions, essential to understanding the link between human health and diet, have produced many interesting results. Until now researchers have been limited to investigating a handful of genes, maybe one or two biochemical pathways and simple groups of nutrients rather than whole foods. The human genome project has provided the background information and new tools - so called post genomic technologies - that enable researchers to take a much more holistic perspective. Nutrigenomics requires input from a wide variety of disciplines, and both the equipment and knowledge involved are highly complex and extremely expensive. Thus, collaboration between academic and industrial organisations is an essential element of this research. This regional network provides an opportunity to: Support a forum for discussion and the exchange of information; Provide access to tailored information for external organisations and individuals; Facilitate interaction between academic and industrial members, national and regional Government, and other national and international organisations with interests in nutrigenomics; Develop a regional dimension to national and international nutrigenomics research, and commercial and public activities in this area; Ensure that sufficient financial resources are available to sustain the network beyond the initial funding provided by EEDA and the DTI.
