Abstract
This project is concerned with the potential anticarcinogenic activity of purple sprouting broccoli breeding lines developed by Elsom¿s Seeds. The initial part of the study will look at the effects of isothiocyanates from broccoli on the growth and development of cultured human colon cells. In the latter phases of the project, it is anticipated that a small human intervention study will be undertaken. The project is designed to provide training for the PhD student, Karen Chambers, in a range of techniques relevant to both plant breeding and biomedical sciences. The project will also assist the developed of added-value purple sprouting broccoli as part of Elsom¿s R&D programme, and contribute to the science mission of IFR.
