Abstract

Details should only be considered in the context of PU information. This project is directed at the modification of cereal grain quality by the insertion and expression of storage protein genes and other genes influencing grain components in transgenic plants. Work is performed as a close collaboration with Project 823293, (Programme 240). Primary targets of the research are the manipulation of bread-making quality in bread wheat, and pasta-making quality in durum wheat by the expression of high molecular weight glutenin subunit genes. Additional targets include the modification of wheat starch composition by the expression of transgenic biosynthetic enzyme genes and the manipulation of polyamine levels in grain. Transformations are made by standard particle bombardment techniques with grain quality genes being inserted in co-transformations with selectable and scorable markers.
