Abstract

The eutrophication and pollution of soils and waters is a serious and increasing problem throughout the world. This project focuses on (i) the atmospheric deposition of pollutants, especially of acid rain and nitrogen; (ii) the pollution of soils through acid deposition and acidification, the associated mobilisation of aluminium and heavy metals, and the amelioration of this through lime applications; (iii) the eutrophication of soils and waters through nitrogen deposition. We utilise measurements of the wet and dry deposition of acidifying substances and nitrogen species to study the impacts of these on soils, especially soil chemistry, using our long-term experiments and archive of soil and plant samples. The complex soil chemical processes of ion exchange, dissolution and precipitation, adsorption and desorption are studied as they relate to acidification and metal mobilisation, especially the prevention of acidification through buffering mechanisms and the application of lime. This project links closely with the Environmental Change Network (031474) within which the atmospheric deposition measurements are made.
