Abstract
The project aims to understand mechanisms responsible for phosphorus acquisition in plants, and from this understanding to develop means to enable plants to become more nutrient efficient. Such plants will be capable of tolerating nutrient deficient environments and will require a reduced input of fertiliser. The approaches developed in this project, including characterisation of phosphate transporters at the protein level, will be applied to study the transporters responsible for the uptake of other major nutrients (nitrogen and sulphur). The interaction between the uptake systems involved will be studied.
