Abstract
The aim is to compare alternative wheat models to find the best set of algorithms for particular purposes; e.g. decision support on management decisions, risk assessment of UK and European wheat production at the regional scale, etc. Existing wheat models differ greatly in their degree of complexity and also in their underlying assumptions, and recent research has highlighted the consequences of these differences for yield prediction. These alternative assumptions will be programmed into interchangeable modules. Appropriate experimental data will be obtained to test the most important assumptions. Finally, identification of optimal models will take place by testing against appropriate data at the scale of interest (crop, farm or region). Objectives 1996 1. Identify most important differences between current wheat simulation models; 2. Programme these into interchangeable modules; 3. Test against available experimental data (eg from GCTE database); 4. Build alternative models for testing against regional scale data (eg MAFF database). 1997 To continue test wheat models against available experimental data, particular GCTE Wheat Network dataset, to identify robustness of the models and the differences between mechanisms used in current wheat simulation models. To continue development of up-scaling methods for the regional yield assessment.
