Abstract

This project facilitates the operation and maintenance of two long term insect monitoring systems. Aphids in daily samples from twelve suction traps in England are identified. These data, with further data from four traps in Scotland, are used to provide weekly, interpreted bulletins on aphid incidence to industry sponsors. The data contribute to a Europe-wide data base 'EXAMINE', co-ordinated from Rothamsted. The data are used for a range of fundamental and applied projects on aphid dynamics, insecticide resistance and plant virus epidemiology, aimed at forecasting the impact of aphids within growing seasons and in the face of environmental changes. The non-aphid fraction of the samples is used for studies relevant to conservation, crop protection, and human and animal health. Moths are identified from daily samples from approximately 100 traps throughout the UK. The data are used for a range of fundamental and applied studies relating mainly to the testing of ecological theory, studying insect migration and to issues in insect conservation.
