Abstract
The current project arises out of recent conclusions from a long-standing investigation at Rothamsted Research on the specific knockdown properties of the pyrethroids and pyrethrins II (in pyrethrum extract). These, combined with the very recently published information on the mode of action of pyrethroids, indicate a strong commercial potential for the exploitation of an ¿enriched¿ pyrethrum extract. This project aims to exploit the knockdown action of pyrethrin II at sub-lethal levels and the synergistic properties (in conjuction with pyrethrin I and other natural/synthetic compounds). It also aims to develop methods for the separation of pyrethin II from the extract. This should result in: 1) Developing value-added products (for established applications) e.g. pre-harvest clean-up, 2) Enhancing effectiveness of other established natural and synthetic insecticides.
