Abstract
The analysis of metabolites is central to plant science research. The project operates as a service to other projects in the division and provides NMR, MS and computational analysis of samples submitted by users. The project also has a strong research element in development of NMR, MS and associated data-handling and interpretation methods for metabolomic fingerprinting of plant extracts. Here, rather than the conventional high-resolution analysis of samples purified with targeting to specific metabolites, the aim is to gain a broad picture of plant metabolism with minimum sample purification. The work involves establishment of high-throughput NMR and MS techniques, coupled with database development and application of chemometric techniques. In this way large numbers of fingerprints from collections of mutant, transgenic and ecotypic plants can be collected and compared.
