Abstract
We aim to develop and test a generic methodology to analyze transient (i.e. short term) dynamics of matrix population models subject to periodic environmental change. Key example is the agriculturally important periodic environments imposed on insects, pathogens and weeds by crop rotations. Experimental and theoretical work will focus on weed growth in crop rotations, where life-history parameters including germination, survival and seed production fluctuate periodically depending on the crops used in the rotation. Predictions of the deterministic models will be tested in controlled environments systems using rapid cycling populations of Arabidopsis as test species. To bridge the gap to the field situation environmental stochasticity will be added to the models. Stochastic models will be tested in a field experiment using Sinapis as weed species in a barley-sugar beet rotation.
