Abstract
Sulphur deficiency has become increasingly widespread in agricultural crops in the UK. This project aims to quantify fluxes of the major processes of S cycling in agricultural systems, to investigate the long-term effects of land uses and fertiliser applications on soil S pools, and to study the interactions of S, C and N. The unique resources of the Rothamsted Classical Experiments will be used. Both natural abundance of stable S isotopes (34S/32S) and highly enriched 34S will be employed under field conditions. X-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES) spectroscopy will be used to determine S speciation of soil organic matter, and the information gained will be related to S mineralisation measurements. In addition, the effects of S on crop quality will be evaluated.
