Abstract
This project aims to develop novel mathematical and statistical methods to measure parameters and test hypotheses concerning spatio-temporal dynamics. This project utilises a novel class of techniques, devised by Perry, termed SADIE (Spatial Analysis by Distance IndicEs). This, while complementary to those traditional methods, uses all the available spatial information and provides biologically intuitive measures based on concepts that are easily visualised and that may be mapped. This is an expanding area of research identified closely with the Sustainable Agricultural Systems theme of the Agri-Food Committee of the BBSRC and consistent with their priority of the Mathematical Modelling of Agricultural Systems and Food Processes. The work embraces studies of biodiversity within fields, ecological stability, agricultural processes at field scales and the population structure and dynamics of non-farmed taxa; the Sustainable Agricultural Systems theme stresses the importance of spatial scales. The work is multidisciplinary by definition, linking biometricians and experimental ecologists. The objective is to develop novel methods to measure, test and display spatial pattern and spatial association for spatially-referenced ecological and agricultural data, usingthe SADIE class of techniques, to aid studies of spatio-temporal dynamics. Also, to disseminate widely and freely associated software to help ecologists analyse their own data using these methods. This project also includes spatial work on dispersal of pollen over time and associated gene flow, issues concerned with the statistical design and analysis of experiments to assess the biodiversity associated with GMHT crops, and spatial issues concerned with the co-existence between GMHT, conventional and organic crops.
