Abstract
Noradrenaline is present in the insect nervous system at low levels. This project aims to use a functional genomics approach to study the role of noradrenaline in the nervous system of Drosophila. Information from Drosophila sequencing programmes will be used to clone specific beta-adrenergic-like receptor subtypes from Drosophila. The receptors will be characterized by expression either transiently in Xenopus oocytes or permanently in clonal cell lines. The cellular expression patterns of these receptors, and of noradrenaline, in the insect nervous system will be determined using immunohistochemistry and in situ hybridization techniques. The results of this project will help in the development of insect control agents with fewer side effects on man and non-insect wildlife. It will also increase our basic knowledge of how the activity of cells in the insect nervous system is modulated by noradrenaline.
