Abstract
Schizophrenia is a debilitating mental illness that affects 1% of the population. It's causes remain unknown however both genetic and environmental probably contribute to the symptoms. Recent advances suggest that the neurotransmitter glutamate (amongst others) may be involved. This project will use antibodies to one major sub type of receptor for the transmitter glutamate (the N-methyl-D-aspartate-`NMDA¿ receptor) to examine the localization and distribution of this receptor in the rat and human brain. Material will be available from rats which have some of the characteristics of `schizophrenic¿ individuals and from the brains of patients who die with a diagnosis of schizophrenia.
