Abstract
This project aims to understand how spermatozoa are able to recognise and bind to eggs in such a specific way. By identifying the molecules on respective gametes that are responsible for this process, we should be able to design drugs that interfere with it and that would form the basis for a new generation of antifertility agents for human and animal use. Proacrosin is a protein found within the acrosomal vesicle of all mammalian spermatozoa. Recently, we have shown that it has a role in fertilization in binding acrosome-reacted sperm to the zona pellucida. This project aims to use a multidisciplinary approach to establish a physiological role for proacrosin/acrosin.
