Abstract
Under normal physiological conditions the contraction of each cardiac muscle cell is under the control of the electrical excitation wave sweeping across the entire heart. During the signal transduction process, referred to as excitation-contraction (EC) coupling, the electrical information, the action potential, is translated into a transient increase in the intracellular Ca2+ concentration, which evokes the mechanical activity of each individual cardiac myocyte. Sudden cardiac events are one of the major causes of death in the western world. Here, we attempt to understand how various hormones mediate sudden cardiac death and to identify novel drug targets to suppress their action.
