Abstract
We have found, unexpectedly, that two of the vertebrate caudal (cdx) genes, cdx-1 and cdx-4, are expressed in separate domains in the embryonic forebrain. It therefore appears that genes of this family have been co-opted to a new role in evolution: that is, specification of areas in the developing cerebrum. We shall characterize this expression pattern in detail, and also investigate whether the third cdx gene, cdx-2, is also involved.
