Abstract
Nerve fibres, both in the brain and spinal cord (central nervous system) and in the rest of the body (peripheral nervous system) degenerate when they become injured or sick. It has generally been assumed that the mechanisms are different in injury and disease. However, we have shown that the mechanisms are far more related, with at least one step in common that can be delayed by a genetic mutation. We aim to understand the pathways that this mutation delays, and to identify other common features of axon degeneration.
